SYNAPSE-SHOTS 2007-13 AN ONION PEELED As the skins of an onion gradually reveal its insides, so does the peeling-off of the layers of the Bush Administration reveal its putrid inner workings. With the happy face of chaos constantly displayed by this administration, it may go unnoticed that we ain’t as rich as we think we are. For the first time in history, Canadians are making a run for the border in order to shop for bargains in their southern neighbor’s newly created, favorable repository for their erstwhile lagging Loonie. Ask anyone who has traveled overseas recently. A friend just back from Japan said, “I needed a lot more dollars…” China could ruin us today just by cashing in the chunks of our economy and security that it holds in the form of bonds. We certainly are not helping matters by flaunting our courtship with the Dalai Lama. There was a way-pre-Columbian-time when China had the largest exploratory fleet in the world. It easily could have taken over the then-known (maybe unknown, too) parts of the globe. They said, “Nah,” sailed back home and set their sights inwardly. With that long memory, military and scientific advances, and newly acquired prosperity, how long will it be before their sub rosa, blackmailing regarding Taiwan breaks out into the open. Would somebody tell Dubya to put on his glasses the next time he peers into somebody’s soul! He certainly goofed with Vladimir. Putin has been honing his KGB skills by steadily leading Russia back to the good old days. Bit by bit, he has taken complete control of the government. Keep an eye out for his Hitlerian moves during the upcoming elections for premier. (Remember, you heard it hear first.) Internationally, we have provided Putin with the perfect opportunity to launch a new “Cold (let’s hope) War.” With his recent embrace of Ahmadinejad, he’s got us right where he wants us. With that combination of petrol and WMD, how empty and embarrassing now has been our bellicose bellowing against Iran? Does anyone think that Europe—“Old” and/or New—or the rest of the sane world want again to tread that hackneyed and perilous path? As the layers of the Bush Administration onion tantalizing come off, one by one, they reveal a rotten core that not only is a study in political ineptitude but also prompts deep concern as to whether we will be able to excise the offending parts before they have metastasized throughout the whole onion.
