This is not to denigrate
Nor otherwise invalidate
All the passion now extant
About a canine’s housing grant.

What, with all the death and gore,
And all the rest we have in store,
Why should this be all the rage,
When profound matters fill the page?

Why do not great teardrops fall
When flag-draped coffins cast their pall?
Are there so few tears to share
With dear pet’s plight and bugler’s blare?
