SYNAPSE-SHOTS 2007-17
This is a shout-out to those in other parts of the country who, because of the tremendous fires in Malibu and parts of Southern California north of here, may not become aware of the gravity of the situation in San Diego until a later time.

The civic center of San Diego is on the Pacific bay. Currently surrounding the central, downtown area (whence comes this report), in a roughly 10-15-mile diameter, north, northeast and southeast, there is a ring of uncontrolled flame. All local resource personnel are involved: fire, police, sheriff, border patrol, military, etc.

Yesterday, just as San Diego was preparing to send help to areas north, hot winds caused the several ongoing wildfires to go out of control. Of course, those resources were called back, and by last night there was a mandatory evacuation call for tens of thousands of residents. I just heard that figure has now reached a quarter of a million. Homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, nursing facilities, etc. have been affected either directly or indirectly by the fires.

San Diego is in the southwestern-most corner of the country. It is bordered by Mexico, the Pacific Ocean and, currently, by an uncontrollable ring of fire.
