WILL NO ONE RID US OF THESE MEDDLESOME “MEESES”?

Unlike the annoyance expressed in the cartoon line, “I hate these meeses to pieces,” King Henry II’s frustration was considerably more real and ultimately deadly when he incited his barons to action by uttering the plaintive plea against former best friend Thomas Becket, whom he had mistakenly elevated to Archbishop of Canterbury: “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?” Well, my “meeses” are Dubya and company. Of course, the centuries have relieved us of having to resort to the desperate measures implied by Henry II.

It is uncanny that Dubya and Cheney are again attempting to get one over on us with yet another shell game of shuffling hopped-up intelligence reports. This time, however, having been once bitten, sixteen intelligence agencies (which we can hope now are freely exchanging their intakes), en masse, have gotten out in front in a CYA move intended to protect them—and ultimately us—from further deadly meddling in the Middle East.

For the past several weeks, hoping to make a case for attacking Iran, the two bad cops Dubya and Cheney have been out there stirring up the same apocalyptic fervor with scary visions of a nuclear (it’s still “NOOK-yoo-ler”) holocaust embodied in World War III! Children who were not born when they attempted the same flim-flam against Iraq, are now looking toward starting school. Unfortunately, these Neocon ideas toward establishing a Pax Americana in that part of the world still resonate with just enough of the population to allow these unconscionable war mongers to keep up the drum beat. As far as the rest of us are concerned, we are sick and tired of these flagrant assaults upon our credibility and intelligence.

Henry II would have loved to have the alternative of impeaching the “meddlesome priest” whom he both loved and hated.
