SYNAPSE-SHOTS 2008-5
THE ELEPHANT IN DISARRAY

With the ascent of John McCain to “front-runner” status, the right-wing of the Republican Party has gone completely out of sorts. He, who headed up the ranks of those whom the right-wingers designate as “RINO,” (Republicans in Name Only), is now in position, probably, to lead their party’s ticket as candidate for the presidency of the United States.

The extreme of this revolt against one of their own, is Ann Coulter’s assertion that Hillary Clinton is more conservative than John McCain, and that therefore she would not only vote for Hillary, but would also campaign for her. This, of course, is the endorsement for which Hillary has been drooling—not! If there is any validity in Coulter’s contention—and validity is an uncomfortable term to be used with Ann—it probably has more to do with gender than politics. A pop-psy reading of Coulter is that her aggressive personality may suffer severe restrictions in this still-male-dominated society.

Right-wing fundamentalists are eloquent in their silence. Unheard on the ether are the Pat Robertsons. Famed for his direct-mail efforts on behalf of past Republican candidates in the heady days of GOP dominance, Richard Viguerie, early last year announced that he and other right-wingers had met and considered the possibility of backing a third party candidate.

The lambasting of McCain by right-wing radio is unprecedented. It is almost embarrassing they way they are dismissing McCain as an unacceptable rebel against their cause. Their last straw of diminishing hope lies in supporting Mitt Romney over the weekend, leading up to a defining “Super-Duper” Tuesday.

Who knew that the Repubs would be all askew at this time, while the remaining two Demos are so in tune that it appears almost improbable that they not form a final duo, despite the ultimate outcome.
