SYNAPSE-SHOTS 2009-3
The MASTER of the AIR

There was a master of the air
Who one cold day was tested.
The takeoff went without a care,
O’er where some birds were nested.

The passengers, before the flight,
Were at the gate assembled.
They, none, could have divined their plight,
Or well they would have trembled.

Once in the air, this massive bird
Wild geese was to encounter.
The master of the air then heard
Both of his engines founder.

He made a turn, but it was late;
He could not make a landing.
He now had to match wits with Fate,
Through super aircrtaft handling.

The river was his only out;
He knew the odds were daunting.
There was no time to fret and pout;
Fate would not cease her taunting.

The master reached back, long and hard
For all of his resources.
There was no time to be on guard,
To weigh the gains and losses.

He warned the passengers and crew
To brace for the great impact
The master knew what he must do’
To ditch that big bird all intact.

Though glider trained, The weight was such
The master never dreamed of.
For he had never felt so much
Dead weight to steer up above.

The touch was deft and safe and cool;
The passengers were shaken.
The master covered ev’ry rule
Of each course he had taken.

The master and his steady crew
Deplaned their charges forthwith.
The river boats did what they do;
Their helping hands were life’s gift.

When folks tell of this captain’s dare
To ev’ry son and daughter,
They’ll say he ruled not just the air,
But mastered, too, the water.
