“MEL”-TDOWNS’ PATERNAL PARTICIPATION

Mel Gibson’s excesses are becoming legend. He is running out of races and religions to disparage. Although it may appear that his raging is booze-based, that well may not be the only cause of his affliction. Imagining what might have been the atmosphere in the household in which he grew up, could place Mel’s dilemma in a clearer light. Living under the thumb of a martinetish, virulently anti-Semitic, Holocaust deniers, whose genius IQ might have made him appear omniscient, could have been overwhelming and nearly impossible to overcome.

Hutton Gibson, in order to escape the Jews he so detested, moved his wife and ten children (including Mel) from Brooklyn, first to Ireland and then to Australia, where they adopted an eleventh child.

·       Hutton is an ultra-conservative Catholic a radical proponent of the Latin mass. He has been at war with the Church since the Second Vatican Council, which he considers a “Masonic plot backed by the Jews.” He views all popes since, and including, John XXIII as illegitimate.

·       With regard to the Holocaust, Hutton Gibson claims there were not enough Jews in Europe to sustain the six million total – and even if there had been, the disposal systems were insufficient to sustain  that number of executions.

·       Hutton maintains that the 9/11 horrors were created with the use of remote-control devices.

·       This pater familias extraordinaire otherwise magnificent mental capacity has earned him substantial prize money on Jeopardy and similar quiz shows.

“Sins not to be visited upon…,” and all that, certainly still is operative. That is not the intention here. We should be aware, however, of environmental – and maybe biological – forces that may underlie Mel Gibson’s seemingly uncontrollable ethnic- and religion-laced hate-filled outbursts. From surface appearances, he presents a pleasant enough personality. His rants, though, reveal a deep, roiling volcano on the verge of imminent eruption. In order to prevent the release of all of that white-hot magma, those close to Mel should intervene and sincerely nudge him toward seeking effective mental healthcare.
