PoemsSYNAPSE-SHOTS 2012-1 WHENCE…?
We, the human animal, are at once mean and marvelous. Above it all, our curiosity is our cure. As we begin the twelfth year of the new millennium, and as we attend to our seemingly meaningless, quotidian pursuits in Iowa and elsewhere, we continue to challenge the series of frontiers that have mocked us since our inception. Our nature is to study those frontiers and overcome them. That is why, at this moment, we as a species, are aboard twin vehicles seeking to divine the composition of that old Devil Moon.
It matters not how we respond the headlines emanating from the several continents. Markets go up; markets go down. Wealth ebbs and flows. Sometimes we praise; sometimes we demean. Sometimes we heal; sometimes we maim. Sometimes we thrill; sometimes we kill. No matter, our reproduction continues. If not, how else would be satisfy that burning curiosity?
So, as we continue to circumnavigate the moon, we merely are carrying on a quest to reverse-engineer our existence. To the best of our knowledge, the grain of universal sand upon which we reside resulted from a tremendous explosion some fifteen billion years ago. As our grain was in the process of cooling, a portion of it shot off and became our moon. Although we did not appear until billions of years later, we still want to know why that lunar sub-grain is smooth on one side and clumpy on the other. And, besides, as we are looking upon and through the moon, it may contain the liquids and minerals we will need in order to extend our insatiable homo-curiosity infinitely into the cosmos.
There was a rare creature called, “…man…” -- As only “hu…” and “…ity” can. Defying its girth, “Man” jumped off the earth, And all through God’s heaven he ran..
